<p>Dating back to the mid-17th century and nestled riverside,&nbsp;<a href="https://theboataterbistock.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Boat</a>&nbsp;has charm in spades &#8211; exposed beams, cosy rooms and plenty of atmosphere. On Sundays they serve a cracking roast: topside of beef (pink, naturally), half roast chicken or pork belly, each with seasonal greens, a Yorkshire pudding and red wine gravy. Want extras? The menu also lets you top up with pigs in blankets or cauliflower cheese. Mains from £20.95.</p>

<p>Sundays don&#8217;t come more charming than at the <a href="https://www.blueanchoraberthaw.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blue Anchor Inn</a>, a 14th-century thatched pub in the heart of the Vale. Inside, oak beams and flagstone floors are still intact, but the kitchen has definitely been through <em>10 Years Younger</em>, restaurant edition. Three courses are a steal at £30.70, with a choice of roasts, plus a fish and vegan option. Proper comfort food done beautifully. </p>

<p>Fine dining without the faff &#8211; that&#8217;s the vibe at <a href="https://www.thefannytalbotgastropub.co.uk/dining.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Fanny Talbot</a> in Barmouth, Gwynedd, where<em> MasterChef: The Professionals</em> finalist Owen Vaughan shows off serious kitchen chops. Menus change with the seasons, but expect to find melt-in-the-mouth sirloin beef and delicious veggie winners like butternut squash risotto with black garlic, feta and harissa roasted carrots. And don’t even think about skipping the cauliflower cheese — it’s loaded with leeks and crispy onions and worth every forkful. Two courses £30, three courses £38. </p>

<p>Rustic-chic runs throughout this riverside inn, <a href="https://www.newbridgeonusk.com/home/dining/menus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newbridge on Usk</a>, situated in a hamlet just outside of the town. There&#8217;s always a real fire roaring, and the walls are painted with art and mirrors, so it&#8217;s a pretty cosy environment, perfect for a sleepy Sunday. This 2 AA Rosette restaurant serves its roasts between midday and 8pm every Sunday, with live music adding to the mellow mood. Starters include deep-fried mozzarella with fermented tomato and balsamic pickled onion, or confit duck leg terrine with ruby grapefruit marmalade. Three courses £36.</p>

Choose from Welsh lamb, aged Pembrokeshire beef brisket, pork belly with crackling or chicken breast — all piled high with Yorkshire puds, crisp roasties, seasonal veg and rich gravy. Add cauliflower cheese or pigs in blankets if you’re feeling indulgent. Mains from £19. Top tip: reserve early &#8211; this place fills up fast when the sun (or the coast path) calls.</p>

<p>Cosy, warm and welcoming &#8211; and dog-friendly too &#8211; <a href="https://www.felinfachgriffin.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Felin Fach Griffin</a> pub lies in the magical market town of Brecon, surrounded by towering mountains. If you’re after quaint and traditional, this is the one. The menus change daily with the seasons, showcasing the best from the Welsh Borders. Tuck into Huntsham Court Farm pork, longhorn beef or a maple-glazed celeriac, then loosen your belt for dessert &#8211; caramelised pineapple with butterscotch sauce and lime sorbet is no friend to a tight buckle.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://heathcockcardiff.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heathcock</a> pub has been one of north Cardiff&#8217;s most loved watering holes for more than a century. The daily changing menus whip up tasty dishes using locally sourced meat, vegetables and game. If you’re planning on popping down for a Sunday lunch you’ll need to book in advance, particularly if the brood are with you. Alongside Sunday specials like duck leg, slow roast porchetta, venison and rump, there are some easy-please options like gnocchi and fish.</p>

<p>This cosy country pub in the Brecon Beacons does Sunday roasts with flair. The <a href="https://threehorseshoesgroesffordd.com/food-and-wine-menu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">menu</a> changes weekly to reflect the best local ingredients &#8211; Welsh lamb rump or topside of Welsh beef are regulars, alongside a vegan roast aubergine for non-meat eaters. The kitchen forages around the area (with help from food writer Adele Nozedar), so you’ll spot seasonal surprises in the mix. Starters like pork belly croquettes or salt-baked kohlrabi hint at their creative touch. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tremfan-hall-llanbedrog-gwynedd"><a href="https://threehorseshoesgroesffordd.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tremfan Hall</a>, Llanbedrog (Gwynedd)</h3>



<p>If you find yourself up on the Llyn Peninsula come Sunday, make a beeline for <a href="https://threehorseshoesgroesffordd.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tremfan Hall</a>. The views over Cardigan Bay are knockout, but the roast easily holds its own. You can choose from Welsh beef rump, pork tomahawk chop, turkey crown or braised feather blade of beef &#8211; all piled high with Yorkshire puds, roast and mashed spuds, mixed veg, stuffing and plenty of rich gravy. Feeling fancy? Add pigs in blankets or cauliflower cheese on the side. Book ahead for one of the three sittings — 12, 3 or 6pm — and settle in for a long, lazy lunch.</p>

<p>If you live in the capital, love your food and haven’t been to Heaneys &#8211; honestly, what have you been doing? Inside, it’s all relaxed vibes and seriously good cooking. Sundays mean a standout roast of dry-aged beef with horseradish, crispy duck-fat roasties and a stuffed Yorkshire pud that might just steal the show.</p>

<p>Perched above the waves in Bracelet Bay, Rok pairs knockout sea views with seriously good Sunday roasts. Opened in 2024, it’s already a Mumbles favourite, run by the ever-busy Hole family — of The Green Room, The Secret Beach Bar and Verdi’s fame (do they ever sleep?). The menu champions local ingredients and great value, but the real showstopper might just be the veggie roast: a five-nut filo parcel with root vegetable gravy. Two courses £30, three courses £36.</p>

<p>The Sunday roast here was crowned&nbsp;<em>Good Food Guide’s Best Roast 2024</em>&nbsp;— so that’s a promising start. Forage champions Welsh produce, with ingredients sourced straight from Penllyn Estate Farm. After polishing off your roast, wander through the farm shop and grab a few goodies to take home for supper &#8211; you’ll want to stretch the experience out as long as possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size" id="h-catch-22-anglesey"><a href="https://www.catch22anglesey.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Catch 22</a>, Anglesey</h2>



<p>Up on the beautiful Isle of Anglesey, <a href="https://www.catch22anglesey.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Catch 22</a> may be best known for offering fish and shellfish sourced from the island, but their Sunday roast deserves just as much praise. The vibe is effortlessly cool, with floor-to-ceiling windows, warm wood interiors and a family team &#8211; head chef Neil, wife Mel and her sister Ellie &#8211; who make everyone feel like a regular. Start with Cobble Lane culatello ham croquetas with roast apple gel and parmesan before diving into Welsh beef sirloin topped with a brisket croquette, and <em>stwnsh rwdan</em> – a traditional North Walian swede dish.</p>

<p>Tucked away in the Narberth hills, this <a href="https://grovenarberth.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">luxury hotel</a> is surrounded by the best of Welsh nature &#8211; the perfect setting for a lazy lunch. The three-course Sunday menu keeps both meat-lovers and veggie fans happy. Start with a potato and lovage velouté with walnut and apple, then choose your roast &#8211; each served with smoked roasties, crunchy garden greens, creamy cauliflower cheese, a fluffy Yorkshire pud, and of course, rich gravy. For dessert, it has to be treacle tart with plum and crème fraiche. Yes, you&#8217;ll roll home, but happily so.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size" id="h-the-angel-hotel-abergavenny"><a href="https://www.angelabergavenny.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Angel Hotel</a>, Abergavenny</h2>



<p>A cracker of a Sunday roast awaits at this Georgian coaching inn, with its original parquet flooring and a dining room that doubles as an art gallery. The Oak Room holds two AA Rosettes, and has an elegant, grown-up feel. Expect roast leg of Welsh lamb served with braised onion and redcurrant gravy then indulge your sweet tooth with a<em> tarte fine aux pomme</em>s. Vegans are in for a treat too &#8211; the juicy marble &#8220;steak&#8221; is a thick-cut plant-based fillet that looks (and tastes) the part. </p>
