<p>I stayed at Bodsgallen Hall a few years back and still remember the stunning interiors, all wood panelled walls and huge 17th-century fireplaces; it somehow manages to feels homely but grand at the same time. Owned by the National Trust and sitting just outside Llandudno, you&#8217;re in ideal surrounds for Bodysgallen Hall&#8217;s sumptuous traditional Welsh afternoon tea (all the usuals, with bara brith on the menu too for a good-value £35pp). An additional £15 will add a glass of Champers to the tab.  You can choose where you&#8217;d like to take your tea but our tip is firmly the elegant drawing room. </p>

<p>You may recognise the beautiful exteriors of Let Them See Cake if you ever stroll around Victoria Park on a sunny day. Gareth Davies and Ryan Rowe opened their cake shop in 2020, and it&#8217;s a pastel vision with decor that is part Marie Antoinette boudoir, part Barbie&#8217;s front lounge. It&#8217;s been such a hit that the team starred in their own docu-series, <em>Hot Cakes</em>. The afternoon tea menu, which costs £35 per person, is served Friday to Sunday, and changes with the season. You&#8217;ll always find classics like a perfectly fluffy scone laden with jam and cream, but also, delicious specials. The autumn menu, for instance, is filled with flavours of pumpkin spice, pecan and banoffee, and a pulled pork and pickled cabbage brioche roll. Bird &amp; Blend tea is served via a unique teapot, which sits atop your teacup for the perfect (and very fun) pour.</p>

<p>Set amongst the backdrop of gorgeous Eryri national park, Plas Dinas is the former home of Lord Snowdon, so no surprise it&#8217;s giving out five-star luxury vibes. Afternoon tea is served in your choice of the relaxed Drawing Room or more formal Dining Room, 1pm – 3pm, Tue – Sun with a Festive menu kicking in from 26 Nov. Welsh rarebit and bara brith are staples on a very generous Signature Afternoon tea (£36.95 pp) that you can access via helicopter should you want to make a right royal entrance. </p>

<p>Another exquisite luxury option –&nbsp;we know, we spoil you. The restaurant at five- star Victorian hotel Palé Hall holds three AA Rosettes so it&#8217;s a strong hunch from us that afternoon tea will be worth your while. Expect a selection of finger sandwiches, homemade patisseries, homemade scones, and your choice of hot drink for £40. The setting of this Grade II listed country house is something else, in the heart of Snowdonia, so it&#8217;s ideal as a weekend escape.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re being dragged along to a game at the Principality Stadium, or find yourself with a few hours to spend following a busy day of shopping, make a beeline for The Parkgate Hotel. Originally Cardiff’s Post Office, opened in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, The Parkgate Hotel opened doors to guests in 2021 as part of The Celtic Collection hotel group, and has quickly become a city favourite as well as a popular TV location &#8211;  <em>Gavin and Stacey</em> and <em>The Guest</em> have both been filmed here. Afternoon tea is served daily within the grand walls of the The Cwrt Lounge and costs £36 per person on weekdays, rising to £42 on the weekend. Dress in your finery, and get excited to try the Parkgate quail scotch egg, chicken tikka and mango mayonnaise sandwich, and zesty lemon sphere.</p>

<p>Afternoon tea in a 13th-century castle? Yes m&#8217;lady. Primarily a wedding venue, the fairytale-turreted and moated Hensol Castle in South Wales also offers itself out for conferences, private events and special occasion dining. Your afternoon tea is served in the modern-glass Atrium, or you can hire a private room for up to 12 to demolish the likes of pork and apple sausage rolls, cinder toffee brownies and rhubarb and custard sponge. Traditional afternoon tea is just £30 per person, or you can treat yourself to a Welsh gin, Prosecco or Laurent Perrier upgrade. Not sure if you can order all three, but we&#8217;re up for the challenge.</p>

<p>We&#8217;re jealous of anybody who lives close enough to pop in on a whim, because at just £28 pp, this afternoon tea at this historic country house hotel is a steal. Nine miles west Hay-on-Wye with a history that takes it back to 560AD (though it was largely rebuilt in the Jacobean style in 1632), it&#8217;s a tight window for eating your afternoon tea here – between 2pm – 4pm on Sundays, with a couple of days&#8217; notice in advance. Welsh designer Laura Ashley once owned Llangoed Hall with her husband, so feel free to go for the elegant Ashley afternoon tea which is served with a delicious glass of elderflower Champagne.</p>
